Jackson DeMello Hyde
10/24/1948-10/07/2023
Jack was a man of independent and adventurous spirit.
This is evident by the way he lived his life. From humble beginnings in Florida, to the green mountains of Vermont, to the lush paradise of Hawaii, to the scrubby expanse of New Mexico, he found joy in exploring the path least taken.
A veteran of the US Army, his views of humanity, injustice, and politics were shaped by his service with the Army Corps of Engineers in Vietnam throughout 1969-1970.
He had a successful career as a contractor, both for a large construction company in Vermont and later, running his own business on Hawaii.
He loved skydiving so much that he earned his private pilot’s license, and spent many hours flying over the mountains of Vermont and Lake Champlain (where he swore he saw the lake monster, Champ).
He was a treasure seeker, figuratively and literally. He spent many years trying to figure out Forrest Fenn’s buried treasure poem, always optimistic, always believing that he was . . . (this) close.
Beyond those things, Jack had a great sense of humor, a drive for working hard, and a passion for living simply.
He was a son of Isabella DeMello and Robert Hyde; a brother to Lin Kalson, Dan Hyde, Fran Myatt, and Fay Johnson; a proud father to Jen Hyde; an uncle to Sylas DeMello; and a friend to many.
His effortless chuckles will be missed.
“If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.”
-Forrest Fenn
I believe Jack has found peace and the ultimate treasure in the great beyond.
He will be put to rest at the Bath National Cemetery on Wednesday, November 8th 2023.
Thank you, Mr Hyde, for making my time with you so enjoyable. You will be missed and will be remembered forever. Enjoy you final destination.
