Emil (Joe) Marques

d. April 9, 2024

Emil (Joe) Marques, a cherished husband of 44 years, devoted father, beloved grandfather, esteemed veteran, and a man of many talents and passions, passed away peacefully at the age of 72 in his home on April 9, 2024, after bravely battling cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family, including his wife Joan (nee Salvesen), children Joey and Elizabeth, and his sister Rose Mary.

Joe’s life was a tapestry of dedication, service, and joy in various pursuits. Born to Emidio Marques and Jean (nee Bequette), he grew up alongside his sister Rose and brothers Albert, Michael, Manuel, and Louis, embracing a love for learning and a knack for fixing and building things that would define his adulthood.

Joe served in the U.S. Coast Guard and was a proud member of various organizations, including the Adoniram Lodge #80 in NJ, American Legion #99 in NJ, Moose Lodge #1860 in AZ, Amvets #19 in AZ (as a life member), Elks Lodge #24 in NY, and former Elks Lodge #1050 in NJ.

An electrician by trade and 27-year veteran of NJ Transit, Joe’s skills extended far beyond his profession. He had a passion for darts, billiards, karaoke, and dancing, bringing laughter and camaraderie wherever he went. His love for fishing and gardening allowed him moments of peace and connection with nature, reflecting his deep appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.

As a self-taught individual at heart, Joe immersed himself in books, from classics to science fiction, finding inspiration and wonder in the pages he turned. His thirst for knowledge was matched only by his generosity, always ready to lend a helping hand to friends and neighbors in need.

Joe’s love for music, especially country, added a soundtrack of joy to his life’s journey. His favorite artists, including Toby Keith and Blake Shelton, were a testament to his passion for this genre and its timeless appeal.

Joe’s legacy lives on through his family, including his son Joey (wife Lan), daughter Elizabeth Sefkow (husband Adam), sister Rose Mary, brother Manuel, and beloved wife Joan. He will always be “Pop-pop” to his grandchildren, Dean, Stella, Quinn and Blake.  They held a special place in his heart, and he made countless sacrifices to be close to them.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests considering a donation to Elks Against Cancer, a cause dear to Joe’s heart. His memory will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him, and his spirit of curiosity, kindness, and love will continue to inspire generations to come.
