Rochester NY: Ira (Buddy) Henry Gartrell was born November 9, 1950, in Florence, South Carolina to the late Mary Barnes Love and Nathaniel Gartrell. He departed this life on May 13, 2016 at Strong Memorial Hospital, with his family by his side.
Ira was predeceased by his parents, Mother, Mary Barnes Love and Father Nathaniel Gartrell. He is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth Gartrell; daughters, Chennita Gartrell and Alecia Gartrell; son Cory (Mary) Gartrell; brother, Willie (Betty) Gartrell; nephew, Darien Gartrell; Niece, Kemia Gartrell; uncle, Sonny (Gertrude) Barnes; cousin, Nelda Barnes and a host of other relatives he loved so much.
Ira entered the US Navy in 1972 and he served his country during the Vietnam Era. After his time in the military, he and his wife, Elizabeth, settled in Rochester, NY to raised their family. He worked at Kodak as a security guard. He was also a long time truck driver which allowed him to travel nationally. In addition, Ira was co-owner of Gartrell-Love Construction and paved some of the of the roads and walkways we all use today. He had a passion for travel, reading, history, and he loved to reminisce.
Ira enjoyed his time overseas especially because he was able to travel, see different places, and experience different cultures. Naples, Italy and Amsterdam were some of the favorite places he visited. Naples because he loved the food and Amsterdam because of its diversity.
As much as he loved traveling, he loved home the most because home was where his family was. He was so proud of all of his children. He boasted all the time about them and was so proud to be their dad. Upon meeting Ira, he would always have a story to tell highlighting the accomplishments of his children. He was a loving father and husband. Where you would see Elizabeth, you would see Ira. They were best friends to the end.
Ira’s Visitation will be held Friday, May 20th 10 A.M. – 12 Noon at Riverside Cemetery, Chapel of Peace, 2650 Lake Avenue. His Funeral Service with Military Honors will be held following visitation at 12 Noon. Interment held privately.
