Brighton, NY: Jennifer L. Gravitz passed away on January 24, 2020 after sixty-one years of embracing life with energetic joy and love. True to her spirit, Jennifer waited until every close family member could say goodbye, which was her way of comforting us all through her final moments. She lived her whole life loving and serving others.
Jennifer is predeceased by her mother, Nancy Gravitz, and brother-in-law, Patrick Butler. She is survived by her cherished wife of 22 years, Donna Butler-Lemcke, sons, John Roos and Corey Roos (Valerie), by Donna’s children, Brett Lemcke (Denise) and Erin Lemcke-Berno (Nicholas), by her father, Dr. Leonard Gravitz (Marleen), her siblings, Elisa Gravitz (Joe Garmon), Craig Gravitz (Sharon), and Amy Gravitz, sister-in-law Deb Butler DeMott, brother-in-law Jim Butler, and by her ten beloved grandchildren. She is also survived by her nieces, nephews, cousins and many lifelong friends, including Mark Roos and Jerry Rigby.
It’s impossible to describe Jennifer’s incredible impact as wife, mother, daughter, Bubbee, professor, rabbi, attorney, friend, mentor, and advocate. She brought contagious energy and passion into every interaction. Spending just a few minutes with Jennifer left you feeling seen, heard, and valued. Jennifer consistently voiced and signed “I love you,” and she reminded us that life is for living. We can honor her amazing spirit by doing exactly that.
Jennifer’s 40-year career at RIT included chairing NTID’s Department of Liberal Studies, interpreting ASL, teaching criminal justice, serving as Hillel chaplain, and leading many Birthright trips to Israel. Jennifer was also a fierce advocate for gay marriage, touching the lives of countless individuals.
A special thanks goes to Jennifer’s caretakers, Dr. Michelle Shayne and her group at Pluta Cancer Center, as well as Deb Butler DeMott and Heather and Joel Menchel for the countless hours contributing to Jennifer’s care.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, February 23, 2020 at 10am at the University of Rochester Interfaith Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations to the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester or Rescued Treasures Pet Adoptions on Latta Rd.
