It is with deep sorrow that we share the death of Dr. John Ross Shafer.
John had an abiding love for his family. He was an educator, athlete, and faithful member of Asbury First United Methodist Church, who lived life with a strong moral compass and faith. A graduate of Cornell University and the University of Rochester, he had a fulfilling and distinguished career in education.
He leaves his beloved wife, Rev. Susan S. Shafer, and sister, Kathy Shafer Wickwire. Three loved children and their partners … Dr. Nancy Shafer Clark and John Clark, John Eric Shafer and Susie Shafer, and Dr. Timothy Ross Shafer and Audrey Shafer, and seven grandchildren who each graced his life: Anna Clark, Payton Shafer, Declan Shafer, Eric Shafer, Emily Clark, Claire Clark and Keely Shafer. Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nancy and Len Davidow.
A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at Asbury First United Methodist on Friday, November 3 rd at 1:00 pm with a reception immediately following the service. As desired, Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Fund of Asbury First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.
