ROCHESTER, NY April 4, 2025, at the age of 88. Predeceased by her husband Anthony “Tony” Carretta. She is survived by her daughter Judi (Sam) Dana; son Joe (Christina) Carretta; grandchildren Elyse (Mark) Cardarelli, Patrick (Janine) Dana, Joey Carretta, Juliana Carretta; great-grandchildren Alexis Cardarelli (Austin Myers), Marco Cardarelli, in addition to other loving family members, dear friends, and probably the best ten-lady care team ever assembled.
Libby’s passions included many things, with none being greater than her love of family and children. Whether you were one of her own, or one of the many fortunate she came to embrace, you were always met with a welcoming home, a heartfelt hug, and certainly a wonderful meal.
She would remember many details about everyone, including your favorite foods. Libby was a talented and creative cook and baker. She had the ability to to eat something once, then go home and recreate it as equally delicious, oftentimes better. If she knew what ingredients you liked, on her table you would always find a very special treat.
She could bake up a storm, and around the holidays, you could always count on gaining at least one pound, maybe more with her delicious assortment of Christmas cookies; a wonderful tradition now carried on by her daughter Judi.
And let’s not forget the old-school Italian wedding favors with the Jordan sugar-coated almonds. Every bride in the family or in her friend circle would get a custom-designed flower made with their wedding colors. No two were the same and each one was painstakingly made by hand.
Libby was very thoughtful and kind. Often a comforting ear or nurturing caretaker, people always felt her love by the ways she would help them through whatever their situation was or need would require.
She also took pride in her home and yard. If she wasn’t making sure everything was ‘just-so’ inside, she could be found in the garden, sculpting her topiaries or watering her floral displays.
Libby loved long walks on the sands of Marco Island, watching anything about figure skating, reading novels, and the music of her favorite Italian-American tenors Sergio Franchi and Andrea Bocelli. And let’s not forget the occasional dry BV Manhattan on the rocks a twist- in a stem glass.
Friday afternoons were for her sisters. Ange, Jess, Gracie, and Libby would get together every week to have lunch, shop, have coffee, and share lots of laughs.
The story of her relationship with Tony was a role model for us all. Having met as kids when Tony used to deliver papers to her family home, they went on to celebrate what would have been 66 years of marriage together last October. Loving and devoted to one another, they cared for each other as best they could until they couldn’t any more. Even then, and right up to Tony’s passing, they would sing “You Are My Sunshine” to each other every night before bed.
One can only image the joyous reunion of Tony and his ‘Sunshine’ on April 4th, and the happiness of the sisters as their youngest sibling returned home.
Friends and family alike are invited to attend a memorial mass in honor of both Libby and Tony. It will be held at 9:00AM on Wednesday April 9th at St Charles Borromeo Church on Dewey Avenue, followed by their inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or The Giselle Delorme Heart of Kindness Foundation in her name.
