Penfield, NY: On September 5, 2019, the Angels said, “Welcome aboard!” as Pius often said whenever he met someone new. Born March 2, 1931, in Corning, New York, Pius is survived by his wife, best friend and biggest fan Tanis along with his children, Jeff (Shaun) Yorio of Spencerport, Anne (Brian) Hagan of Rush, Joan (John) Daley of Chili, Janice Yorio of Fort Mill, SC, and Christine Ann Schmitt of Pittsford; grandchildren, Tempest, Maverick and Avalon Yorio, Meaghan (Arun) Beden, John LaRocca, Jr., Jeremiah and Elisabeth Daley, Spencer Gardner; great-grandchildren, Liam, Charlie and Ellie Jane Beden; brother, Francis (Eleanor) Yorio of Charlotte, NC; mother-in-law, Judith Lockwood of Spencerport, sister-in-law, Tara Wilder, and brother-in-law, Troy Shaver (both of Ithaca); many, many nieces, nephews and devoted friends. He is predeceased by his parents (Pius and Anna), brothers (Anthony and Joseph), sisters (Catherine Marmuscak and Helen Woeppel) and former wife Dorothy Yorio.
A retired podiatrist, he was one of the podiatry pioneers in the Rochester area and started the podiatry clinic at the Bath VA Medical Center in the 1970s and remained there for over 50 years. Pius truly cared for all those around him and lent a helping hand wherever he could, including through volunteer work such as Habitat For Humanity and Foodlink. He welcomed home improvement projects from family and friends and loved gardening and working/sitting outdoors in the sunshine. Pius was always up for an adventure (including ziplining), and with Tanis they traveled to 22 states in their time together. He looked forward to hunting season, but it was the camaraderie with friends and family he enjoyed more than bringing home a deer. He started each day with a morning jog, McDonald’s coffee and a trip to the library where he read The Wall Street Journal in its entirety before returning home to watch “Gunsmoke”. Pius ran each year in the Lilac Festival 5K/10K into his mid-80s and came in first place in his age group more often than not; and, when he crossed the Finish Line, he was always smiling and never appeared winded (amazing!). He loved to dance and listen to music, had a clever wit and sage wisdom he shared with those around him. He read about astrophysics for ‘fun’ because he was truly fascinated with the science and how the universe really works. Now he’s among the stars and finding the answers to all of his questions. He proudly stood up for what he believed in and took the high road in life…a trait to be admired. Pius had beautiful blue eyes, a youthful soul, boundless energy and left us much too soon. He was one-of-a-kind, an absolute treasure and will forever remain so in our hearts.
