William J. Noonan

d. May 11, 2023

William Joseph Noonan, 68, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2023 after a courageous battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

Bill was predeceased by his father, James William Noonan.

He is survived by his mother, Elizabeth (nee Mercier) Noonan; his loving fiancée and devoted caregiver, Suzanne Golia; daughter, JaimeRose (Andy) Noonan; sons, Alexander (Sydney) Noonan, and Connor (Nicole) Noonan; sisters, Christine (John) Mancuso, and Elizabeth McGowan; brothers, James (Helene) Noonan, and Leo (Laura) Noonan; uncle Leo (Nancy) Mercier; Bill’s former wife, friend, and mother of his children, Susan Noonan, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Born in Troy, NY on January 2, 1955, Bill—always Billy to his family—attended St. Joseph’s elementary schools and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1973. He earned an AA from Hudson Valley Community College; a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology and an MS in Computer Science, both from Rochester Institute of Technology. He worked as a technician at Fairfield Test Systems, Latham, NY and Fault Finders, Clifton Park, NY; and a software engineer at Eastman Kodak Company, Xerox Corporation, and at the Laboratory of Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester. He retired in 2017.

Bill exemplified a gentle, easy-going soul. He enjoyed the outdoors be it hiking, cycling, canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing, or riding a motorcycle. He loved spending time with his family, and especially treasured their summer vacations at Blue Mountain Lake in the Adirondacks. He cherished his role as a father and supported his children’s activities including crew, robotics, and Scouts. The baker in the. family, he made bread weekly, and pizza on Saturdays. He enjoyed his dogs, mostly Labrador Retrievers, and brewing his own beer. Later, he and his fiancée would take short trips in the Finger Lakes area, dining out for a good steak and Italian food, and occasionally playing Bingo at Turning Stone Casino— although Bill, always gregarious, preferred meeting new people over the game.

Many thanks to Bill’s caregivers, Bonnie B., and good friend, Kathryn “Kitten” Howard. The family would also like to thank the staff at Lifespan, 6-1600 at the University of Rochester, and the fifth floor staff at Kirkhaven Nursing Home. All gave Bill compassionate, loving care and provided him and his family with tremendous support.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests sending contributions to The Alzheimer’s Association or Lifespan.
