I send my condolences to Jane and others in Brucito’s family. I came to know him in the last few years through the music we shared and the stories he told as we drove to rehearsals and performances at churches and nursing homes in the Athens area. His stories of Honduras and the music of Piazzolla will forever live in my heart. I will continue to try to play Ginastera’s “Danza De La Moza Donosa” in a way that might meet his approval and hope that he takes a little time out from playing with the angels in heaven to send his always encouraging words my direction.
Lamento que Brucito ya no esté con nosotros. Gran tipo muy amigo de nuestras tierras al sur del Rio Grande. Tuve la oportunidad de conocerle y compartir momentos y conversar sobre política y la vida. Cuando nos bromas nos saludábamos como se hace en otras tierras ; con un abrazo y con la alegría de encontrarnos en las calles de Athens. Descansa en paz Brucito
Bruce was an optimist, a most cheerful man, and a talented sociologist of Latin America. I worked with him on the Ohio University Committee on Latin American Studies and found him both knowledgeable and responsible in his many contributions. He was excellent ambassador for Ohio University at professional meetings. His Spanish was far better than his self-labeling as a mere speaker of “street Spanish.” I am going to miss seeing him at Athens’ musical events, having enjoyed his clarinet on many occasions. My deepest sympathies to Jane and the family.
I was deeply saddened to learn of Bruce’s passing. We were summer music pals at the silver bay NY Ymca, improvising old tunes in the store there, playing for ice cream, having good times together.
