Daan Zwick

Simple Cremation - Rochester, NY - Rochester Cremation

Daan Marsh Zwick, 97, passed away peacefully at his home in Rochester, NY on November 21st 2019.

Daan was born on July 28, 1922 to Pierre and Mary Zwick.  While he was born in New York City, he grew up in Burlington, Vermont. While in school there, Daan worked as a lodge caretaker on Mount Mansfield.

After obtaining his Chemistry degree in 1943 from the University of Vermont, he was hired by that university as an instructor in physics. Unsure about committing himself to an academic career, Daan thought he would try industrial employment.  In 1944, Daan moved to Rochester, NY and began a career at the Eastman Kodak Research Labs, which lasted more than 40 years. Daan was recognized by many organizations for his work in the film, motion picture and television industries, including receiving the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers Outstanding Achievement award, the British Cinematography, Sound and Television Society Honorary Fellow award, and the Herbert T. Kalmus Gold Medal for Outstanding Achievement.

Following his retirement from Eastman Kodak in 1986, Daan applied much of his time as a volunteer with Greece Volunteer Ambulance Service, the Genesee Valley Chapter of the NY Civil Liberties Union, Hunt Hollow Ski Patrol, Green Mountain Club, as well as others. Daan was particularly proud of precipitating the completion of the Long Trail foot bridge over the Winooski River by the Green Mountain Club.

Daan enjoyed canoeing, hiking, skiing, writing, music and solving puzzles.

Daan was preceded in death by his wife Janis T. Dowd.

He is survived by his three children; Melanie Zwick; Nick Zwick (Terrie); Valerie Campbell (Scott); stepdaughter Laura Dowd (David Gallogly); 2 granddaughters; 5 step granddaughters and first wife Laura Zwick.

At his request, there will be no public memorial service.

Donations to The Green Mountain Club (www.greenmountainclub.org) or American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) www.nyclu.org/en/chapters/genesee-valley are appreciated.

Dann, I remember our times at the research labs when I first started in 1979 as a technician You and other PHDs were so helpful in my ending my career after 28 1/2 years with the greatest company that one could work for. Thank you, and rest in peace.
