Doris N. Calnen

Doris N. Calnen - Rochester Cremation

Rochester, NY – April 23, 2023 at age 90.

Doris leaves behind her loving sister Alberta Twiss; Her children, Denise O’Donnell, Rosemary Phillips, Alvin Calnen Jr, and Charles Calnen; Her grandchildren, Reyna Phillips, Rebecca Phillips, Billie-Joe Calnen; Her great grandson, Etzio Calnen, as well as Robin Nutter, mother and grandmother of Billie-Joe and Etzio Calnen, respectively.

Doris was a woman of many talents and interests. She worked as a seamstress, a school bus driver for Lopes Bus Lines in Raynham, MA, and a landlord to the tenants of her apartment building. She was active in the Girl Scouts, a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and an active member of her local church where she enjoyed singing. Doris made clothes for herself and her family and loved to knit. She once knitted vests for every kindergarten child on her school bus, where they called her “Uncle Martin”. She was a very talented artist and enjoyed using oil paints and watercolors. Doris was considered a “crack shot” in her high school rifle club, and in her older years grew many blueberry bushes for friends and family to come and pick. She was very independent, active, and continued to split her own wood to heat her house until she was 83 years old, much to the dismay of her family.

She donated her time to the local food pantry in Dayton, NY, which was run by Pastor Angie Miller. Doris will be greatly missed by her family, friends, community, and cats.
