Gene attended North Tonawanda Highschool and participated in football, track, and swimming. He continued his education at Hobart College, where he played football and was inducted into the Hobart Football Hall of Fame. In addition, he served in the United States Army.

Gene was a very active and involved member of the community, serving the American Red Cross for over 34 years, and devoting time to youth swim programs in the Rochester area. He cherished spending time with his family and friends.

Gene was a loving and honorable man with great integrity. He was an amazing role model to his children and grandchildren. Gene had an enormous heart and lived selflessly by the motto WWJD. He never forgot a birthday for any of the family, always making them feel special and important. Also, he loved to share his advice and wisdom. Gene left a lasting impression on each person he met, with a smiley face on the palm of his hand and encouraging words. Delorm Family, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father. I remember him to be such a wise and loving man. He really cared about his family and all the Penhurst children. I remember the time that he got together with my father which to say the lease was a difficult man to get along with and went looking to Gabrielle and me and my sister. It was very scary at that time, but they were only looking out for their children. Our thought and prayers are with you all. May his memories live one with each and every one of you.
