James Patrick Flanagan, aged 90, passed away on November 13, 2024, in Rochester, NY. Born on February 5, 1934, James, affectionately known as Jim, dedicated his life to his family, his career, and his passions. James was deeply rooted in his faith and played an active role in his church, embodying the spirit of service and community. Generous to a fault, Jim gave freely to charities and was the first to offer help to family members in a time of need. Despite having no children of his own he was a wonderful Godfather and a father figure for many. Jim was a man who loved life deeply, known for being a dedicated son, brother, and uncle. He maintained close relationships with friends dating back to his grammar school days at St. Andrews and later at Aquinas Institute.
His career spanned over 40 years at Lincoln Rochester, which later became Chase Bank, where he was a respected and valued colleague. James also served honorably in the Army, completing two tours that exemplified his commitment to his country. He was a longtime member of the Henrietta Senior Center where he enjoyed playing euchre. An avid photographer with a passion for travel, James captured the world through his lens, finding beauty and intrigue in distant lands and familiar scenes alike. His love for singing was evident as his beautiful tenor voice graced several choral groups, enriching many lives with his musical talents. Perhaps his greatest love was bargain hunting, especially if a coupon was involved. Buying multiple items, whether he needed them or not was a lifelong habit Survived by his beloved sister, Joan Cannioto, 26 nieces and nephews, along with many great-nieces and nephews, James’ legacy of love and mentorship continues through them. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marcella Streb Flanagan and James Flanagan, along with his siblings Mary Gallipeau, Canice Karnisky, and Richard Flanagan.
A funeral mass will be held Thursday November 21, 2024 at 10:00AM at St. Marianne Cope Parish at Guardian Angels Church, located at 2061 E. Henrietta Road, Rochester NY 14623. A luncheon will follow, celebrating a life well-lived and cherished by many. He will be sorely missed.

I am so thankful that I recently reconnected with this very important man in my life. Jim spent his entire life giving to others over himself. Some of my best memories have my Uncle Jim in them. He loved all his family unconditionally and I will miss him greatly. Godspeed Uncle Jim, my you walk quickly with no further pain in the rest of your journey.
Sincere condolences to all of the family and friends. Jim was a distant cousin. I did not get to see him often, but it was always a joy when I did get to see him. He was a great conversationalist.
Sweet, generous, loving, wonderful Godfather, Uncle Jim. You were an amazing blessing to our family, there was no one like you! I will pray for your soul, miss, and love you, always and forever. May God have mercy on you and welcome you with open
arms into eternal rest in Heaven. Condolences to you, Mom, and all our family.
Uncle Jim, I will miss talking to you. I didn’t get to see you as much as I would have liked because I live in another state but it was always a pleasure when I did. No matter what you were going through, you were always upbeat and laughing with me. Though you were an uncle through marriage and not blood related, I always thought of you as my true uncle. My sympathy to the rest of the family. Rest in peace.
Uncle Jim was a kind man who cared about his family deeply. He always made the effort to be present for all events that he could. His smile lit up the room and he always found time for each of us. His passing is a great loss to all who knew him. I will miss him and always love him.
Uncle Jim we loved you so much our lives will not be the same without you. May you embrace the beatific vision of Almighty God for ever, Amen
