Richard T. Bateman

Simple Cremation - Rochester, NY - Rochester Cremation

GREECE, NY – June 29, 2021 at age 95.  Dick is survived by his loving wife of 69 years Marie Anne (Quinlan); son, Thomas (Wendy) Bateman; daughters, Anne Bateman and Claire (John) Urtis; grandchildren Jessica (Michael) Guzman, Michael (Tara) Bateman, Kyle Harrison (Abby Wilcox), Ryan Harrison (Betty Lee), Julia Urtis; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Michael Guzman; Emilia and Norah Bateman.

Foremost, he was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame ’45, a veteran of the United States Navy, and a retired 35-year engineer for Delco Products/General Motors Corporation.  An adventurer and free spirit, he was an avid sailor, skier, golfer, student of history, lover of Big Band music, and a gentleman from the Greatest Generation.  He was always searching and inspired by a passage from Thoreau’s Walden:  “I long ago lost a hound, a bay horse, and a turtle-dove, and am still on their trail.  Many are the travellers I have spoken concerning them, describing their tracks and what calls they answered to.  I have met one or two who heard the hound, and the tramp of the horse, and even seen the dove disappear behind a cloud, and they seemed as anxious to recover them as if they had lost them themselves.”  May you find them on the road before you.

At Dick’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service but instead a Celebration of Life for immediate family members.  Donations in his honor would be welcome to:  Dementia Society of America (dementiasociety.org), PO Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901 or Veterans Outreach Center (veteransoutreachcenter.org), Inc., 447 South Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620
