Bob and I first met as members of the incoming class at St. Mary’s Catholic Seminary in Baltimore in 1953, and soon became fast friends and ping pong enthusiasts. The following spring I spent Easter vacation with Bob and his family in Newark, NY. As time passed, he would visit our family farm in western Kentucky, at various parishes where I was stationed, and later at my wife Barbara’s and my homes in Baltimore and Wilmington, On many occasions in our travels through the years, we would meet up with Bob for breakfast in Canandaigua, NY. The bond continued to grow as the years passed. I gradually learned of Bob’s many and varied talents: besides being an ardent student of philosophy and theology, he was an amateur archeologist, and a recognized authority on Frederick Douglas. Amazingly, Bob lectured on John Smith, founder of Mormonism, and on the various battles of the Civil War and generals involved on both sides. In addition to such intellectual subjects, Bob was acclaimed for his fanciful and flowing cursive writing and his intricate wood carvings, some of which were gifts to me. Bob was an expert book collector and a fine athlete. First and foremost, Bob was an exemplary ecumenical Christian throughout his life. .For these and many other unmentioned attributes, Bob will be sorely missed by many As for me, I am confident my life will never be quite the same. Rest in Peace my friend!
