Shirley Ann Snyder (Hughes), 83, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, musician, businesswoman, sister and friend, died of complications from multiple sclerosis on November 17, 2019 at St. John’s Home in Rochester, NY. Shirley was the daughter of the late Reverend Clark Snyder and Ruby Bower Snyder.
Shirley’s accomplishments were as varied as her interests. She grew up in Elkland, PA and Elmira, NY and graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College in 1963 with a Bachelor of Arts in English and History. She was a dedicated teacher and mentor, believed in lifelong learning and higher education, and she herself went on to study Children’s literature at the State University of New York – Fredonia and the University of Buffalo, obtaining her Master’s Degree in 1990. Shirley designed and built three houses; founded a dessert catering business and an interior decorating service; sang soprano in church and community choirs; coached the basketball cheerleading squads at Roberts Wesleyan College and Fredonia State University; and served in various leadership positions including Treasurer, Council Member, and pianist at Harvest Chapel Free Methodist Church in Fredonia, NY where she was a founding member.
Shirley was predeceased by her son, Glenn Hughes and grandson, Andrew Black. She is survived by her daughter Michelle (JR McCutcheon) Hughes, son David (Sara) Hughes, daughter Alyssa (Rob) Black; grandchildren Victoria, Jessica, Valerie, Jordan, Steven, Rachel, and Devin; her sister Patricia House, and brothers Keith (Lois), Richard (Janet), and Vernon (Jean) Snyder.
Shirley will be remembered for her deep Christian faith, her selfless generosity, humor, creativity, and ultimately, her grace and courage in the face of debilitating disease. Her children will miss her constant support and unconditional love.
Shirley’s family would like to thank the staff and caregivers of St. John’s Home for their 10 years of love and care. In keeping with Shirley’s wishes, a Memorial Service will be scheduled at a later date. The family asks that donations be made in Shirley’s name to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
