wow so sad to hear of Fred’s passing even though I hardly new him he was always so kind to everyone I new him from school days again so sad and so young.
Very sad. I’ve tried to find what happened to Fred for a long time. He was was a kind soul and an amazing drummer. We were in choir together and Flotilla. He will be missed. 😪My condolences to his family.
Thank you, David, for leaving your memories of Fred. He lived a quiet life through his adult years. He dealt with many life challenges, but he always maintained a rich love of music and drums. He would visit the local jazz clubs in downtown Rochester and often sat in and played drums, when possible. He loved attending the free concerts offered at Eastman. He studied various languages, for personal edification, and was an avid reader. He was very smart and intellectual. Fred was a deep thinker, quiet, and kept to himself. He made many friends wherever he lived, and in this way, he touched people’s lives. I’m glad he touched yours as well. 🙂
Fred was a wonderful warm-hearted soul and a dear friend. I will miss his smile, his good will and his graceful musicality. Through the considerable challenges of his life he kept looking up, and always had a kind word for those around him.
Thank you, Steve, for the kind words. He had his struggles in this life, but touched many with his talents and spirit. I have fond memories of you and Chris coming to our home to practice in the living room. I still have the Flotilla tape you all recorded at I believe Dynamic Sound in Rochester. I know he had many good memories with you and appreciated your friendship. Time has a way of moving people’s lives in different directions, but the life experiences you both shared remained as part of him.
Fred was a great friend. I remember hanging out at his house listening to Oscar Peterson records with his dad in elementary school. Fred was a gifted musician and a great band mate. He was a sweet, genuine and gentle person. I miss him.
I’ll never forget when Fred returned from New York City after visiting you. He LOVED it, and he loved seeing you again! He would mention you from time to time and considered you a close friend, regardless of how long it had been since you both had talked. I can still see his smile as he told me a story of returning to your home quite late at night. Your parents were sleeping, and he said you would whisper real loudly, “We have to be real quiet; my parents are sleeping!” knowing they would hear it. He thought that was so funny! You and Steve were his closest friends during an influential part of his life, and your relationship revolved around his greatest passion–music! He was so talented. Thank you for being his friend and sharing that experience with him. He carried those memories dearly his entire life.
So sorry to hear about Fred’s passing. I was worried because I had not seen him at the jazz festival or around the Eastman neighborhood. He would often attend recitals and concerts. He was always a cheerful fellow to bump into at Java’s. I found this youtube video that was sent to me from the jazziest jams. Fred would often sit in with my band.
