Andrew Hegeman, Pittsford, NY, Rochester Cremation

Pittsford, NY:  Andrew S. Hegeman, retired Commander US Navy, died peacefully on November 9, 2018 in Fairport, NY at the age of 87 after a 2 year struggle with pancreatic cancer. He was recently predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn (Vail) Hegeman, Ed.D (died August 1, 2018). The couple moved to the Rochester area to be with their daughter, Irene Richard, MD, Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester Medical Center, during their declining years.

Andrew was born the peak of the great depression to Edward R. Hegeman, a US Postal Carrier and WWI US Navy veteran, and his wife Matilda (Schuler) Hegeman in Yonkers, NY. The couple was predeceased by their son Paul and survived by 4 children: Jennifer, Mark, and John (Bonnie) Hegeman, Irene Hegeman Richard (Tanya Beiswenger); 5 grandchildren: Shane, Luke, and Terryn Hegeman, Caitlin and Jessica Richard; 3 brothers: Edward, Richard (Mary), William (Marguerite) Hegeman; as well many nieces, nephews and friends.

Andrew graduated from Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, NY and received a scholarship to attend Columbia University, graduating with a BA in 1953. He then enlisted in the US Navy’s OCS Program in Newport, RI. Upon completion, he married his sweetheart, Kathryn Vail on July 10, 1954 and they moved to Washington DC, where Andrew attended the US Naval Intelligence School at the Naval Observatory. The couple spent the next 4 years in various US and oversees locations during Andrew’s active duty, after which he continued in the US Navy Reserves, retiring at the rank of Commander in 1975. The couple had 5 children, whom they raised in Yonkers, NY until 1973 (during which time Andrew obtained his MBA at New York University.) They moved to Eastport, LI to be near Seatuck Cover Marina, a small business Andrew lined up for his retirement from Verizon (formerly NY Telephone Co.) where he worked from 1957-1984 as a financial analyst and staff economist. Meanwhile, Kathryn continued her education, culminating in a doctorate of Education from Columbia University, while working full time as a teacher at Remsenburg-Speonk elementary school. The couple lived in Eastport until 2016, at which point they moved to Pittsford, NY (a beautiful suburb of Rochester).
