Janet (Jan/Mama/Baba) was born June 24, 1930 in Rochester, NY. Predeceased by her parents Edson and Mildred Canning, brother John E. (Norma) Canning, brother-in-law John H. (Francis) Rae Jr., adored daughter, Cynthia Rae Flynn and beloved soul mate and husband of 66 years, Robert Reynolds Rae.

Survived by children Nancy (Tim) Hargrave, Robert (Lynda) Rae Jr, Thomas (Julie) Rae and Kerry T. Flynn; grandchildren Emily (Chris) Brodhead, MacKenzie Hargrave, Samuel Hargrave, Ryan (Chris) Hoke, Robert (Sarah) Rae III, Michael Flynn, Tim (Ashley) Flynn, Meghan Flynn (Bryan Bobo), Brittany Rae and Tucker Rae; great-grandchildren Hagan and Gus Brodhead, Dylan, Peyton and Mia Hoke and Hayley Rae Flynn; dedicated nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews and compassionate caregivers who became family.

After graduating Salutatorian from Victor High School, Jan continued on to University of Rochester School of Nursing, then practiced as an OR Nurse at Strong Memorial Hospital. She was an active member of Junior League of Rochester and RGH Budding Twig; Past President of Rochester Yacht Club Women’s Association; Board member at Friendly Home of Rochester and Hillside Children’s Center, where she also taught dancing lessons.

Jan’s love and warmth were felt daily by her family, countless friends and patients and were personified in her gourmet cooking and baking, gardening and sewing. Her spunky, spirited nature was exemplified in her legendary sense of humor and joke telling, sailing, bowling and fishing prowess, extensive travel, poker club, cigar smoking and top-down convertible driving.

Jan and Bob lived to “make memories” with those they loved and the family is comforted knowing they are together again.

Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life – Shadow Lake Golf Club – Sunday, May 26 – 11:30 am. No prior calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please direct contributions to Hillside Family of Agencies Foundation.
