What big brother lets his little sister hang around with him and his friends? Johnny! Johnny was my best friend growing up. I was friends with all of his friends and he was friends with all of my friends. I went to my first concert (The Cars) with Johnny and 6 of his friends. Streber’s Shed (the big hang out in the day) was always open to me and my girlfriends because I was “Johnny’s Little Sister” which I was referred to as often. We went to the California Brew Haus and Casey Jones every weekend which we walked to with all our friends! I wrote to Johnny every week when he was in the Navy and reported him when he stopped writing back. He was mad at me for a second but made sure he wrote and called often after that! When we were “all grown up” Johnny and I worked together, lived together, argued together and still remained very close to the very last day of his life. I didn’t say it enough but I love you Johnny!

I didn’t know Robert, he inherited my jobs on the USS Lockwood. I am certain he cussed me out every now and then or scratched his head wondering why his predecessors did what they did to the ship. Kinda how things are in life, we all contribute in our own way to keep the world spinning . My sincere condolence in this difficult time.

I don’t remember John’s service dates on the USS Lockwood, but I was an Electrician’s Mate in E-Division with him. I was on between 81-83. He was a funny guy. He called me out of the blue several years back and we had a nice long talk. My condolences to his family and friends. See you on the other side shipmate.

It’s been 30+ years since I last saw John but some guys you just don’t forget. We worked in different divisions but pulled a few liberties together.
I recall the time aboard ship that we first met, I asked John where he was from, John replied ” New York, UPSTATE New York.” After all these years, it still brings a grin in how he said it, wanting to make it VERY clear where his hometown was.
Reading here, I see I’m not the only Lockwood sailor who remembers as being a good friend and shipmate, which is a fine epitaph for any man and one his family can be proud of.
Fair Winds John, see you over the horizon.

Hey buddy …… pulled out some old pictures of us in the PI. We were flying high with youth and invincibility!! But turns out we aren’t invincible after all. What we were was loyal …. always had each other’s back, and there just aren’t that many people around that can say that. I always knew I could count on you.

So here’s a glass lifted in your memory Bix. The sense of humor; the loyalty, and the friendship.

    Never forgotten my friend.

Johnny was my brother George Craft’s best friend. He was always a welcome guest at our house. My parents always thought the world of Johnny! A true friend not only to George but all if us. My Dad enjoyed talking with Johnny about his military service in Japan….as my Dad had also served there as Marine during WW II. He helped us move our Mom from our childhood home which was 2 houses away from the Bixby family. He keep an eye out for them in the old neighbor after we all moved out. Always there for my brother & anyone that needed it. God bless you Johnny….Our hearts & prayers are with Bixby Family
