Lorraine Sessions

Sunrise June 17, 1938 ~ Sunset December 10, 2017

Ms. Lorraine Sessions, affectionately known to many as “G”, of Rochester, NY, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at the age of 79 years young.  “G” was a nickname her pre-teen granddaughter, Tynia gave her.  The “G” stood for “greatest grandma”, which flattered Lorraine and through the years that’s how Tynia introduced her to friends, neighbors, and associates.

Lorraine was known for her sleek fashion sense, often wearing her signature leopard print.  She was active until her end, enjoying hobbies that included bowling, riding her bike, gardening and walking.
Lorraine was born to parents David Sessions and Sally Sessions on June. 17, 1938 in Andrews, SC. She grew up as the youngest of eight. She was proud to be the matriarch to five generations.  She was especially fond of her two great grandsons ages 3 & 5 whom she often cared for and whose energy she tried to mirror.

Lorraine was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, family and friends.  She was an avid gardener. It would be of no surprise to find her at the homes of relatives gardening and making flower beds, just for the fun of it!  She’d have her boom box blasting her favorite tunes while she enthusiastically cultivated landscapes. She was well known throughout her residence at the Voter’s Block Community, for always offering assistance, she even planted and groomed the landscape around the building. Whenever you entered the foyer you were greeted with beautifully manicured plants donated by Lorraine. These floral offerings were especially festive during seasonal holidays when she expanded upon her decorations and even put up a Christmas tree in December.

Lorraine had a great love for community. She was always giving and serving. Since the 1970’s and up to her transition she united herself with organizations that allowed her to remain active and helpful in the community. She worked with ABC (Action for a Better Community), SWAN (Southwest Neighborhood Association), HARP (Home Affordable Refinance Program) advocating for under representative and lower income families striving to help them to improve their quality of life, economic status and to become self-sufficient. Most recent she was very involved in her neighborhood, Voter’s Block Community, which is situated on a local historic landmark — the site where Susan B. Anthony and 15 other women attempted to vote illegally in 1872.

Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Sessions; her granddaughters Tynia Jenkins and Asia Wilcox, her great granddaughter Cyvonne Williams, her great–great grandsons, Makhai and Mykha Williams, her sisters, Carrie Eason, Elizabeth McGee, Minnie Jackson, and her Chihuahua Chico.

Lorraine is preceded in death by her granddaughter Iris Nicole Sessions; her parents, David and Sally; her sisters, Charlotte Dickerson, Ellen Sessions; and her brothers, Jake Sessions and Henry Sessions.
